Power BI

Course overview
What is Power BI?
Power BI is a data analytics and visualisation tool that can create powerful interactive reports and dashboards. Reports can be run from many areas of SIMS, loaded into Power BI where they may be manipulated, relationships between data established, and visualisations created. This course introduces the principles of extracting the data from SIMS, loading it into Power BI, carrying out some basic transformations and establishing data relationships. It will provide you the skills necessary to ensure that schools are best placed to further explore the power of Power BI reporting

Benefits of attending
Power BI is a powerful tool allowing users to easily visually represent, interpret and analyse data. The course will introduce how data can be extracted from SIMS and imported in Power BI for analysis. Power BI allows users to combine data from a range of areas e.g. Attendance, Behaviour and attainment. Data can also be combined from a number of schools for analysis at MAT level.

What you will learn
• SIMS report design and considerations.
• Loading files in Power BI.
• Reformatting data entered.
• Adding formulas to the data e.g. calculating attendance.
• Introduction to the relationship model Overview.
Reports can be designed in many different areas of SIMS such as Attendance, Behaviour, Achievements and Attainment. Traditionally it can be difficult to combine reports from these different areas into one report for analysis purposes.
Further calculations on the reports may be needed to obtain certain desired results, for example, to calculate the number of points from a list of behaviour events.
The course looks at some of the considerations when building the reports in SIMS, including loading reports with pupil characteristics and attendance into Power BI and carrying out transformation of the data. These form the basic principles of getting the data out of SIMS and into Power BI.

Who is it for?
The course is for anyone school based that is interested in analysis of data. The course does not require any prior knowledge but knowledge of designing and creating sims.net reports will aid with the implementation of the principles back in school.
